History

For more than 90 years, Marmion Abbey has shaped lives through prayer, education, and community. Rooted in the Benedictine tradition, our story is one of spiritual devotion, service to others, and commitment to the formation of young people. From humble beginnings in downtown Aurora to a thriving monastic and academic presence on over 300 acres, the Abbey’s history is marked by growth, generosity, and grace.

1933

The Benedictine monks of St. Meinrad Abbey in southern Indiana arrived in Aurora, Illinois, to staff the Fox Valley Catholic High School for Boys.

April 1933

On April 20, 1933, St. Meinrad Abbey accepted the bishop’s offer to take over the Aurora school which was renamed Marmion in honor of Abbot Columba Marmion.

August 1943

August 1, 1943: Marmion monastic community was made a dependent priory of St. Meinrad Abbey, beginning full monastic life in Aurora.

March 1947

March 21, 1947: Marmion was elevated to an independent abbey, with Father Gerald Benkert as its first abbot and 32 charter members.

August 1952

August 21, 1952: Monks moved into a newly built permanent abbey on Butterfield Road, on a site that grew to nearly 350 acres.

1960

By 1960, the abbey had grown to about 60 monks.

1960

1960: Marmion responded to Pope John XXIII’s call to send monks to Latin America, leading to the foundation of San José Priory in Guatemala.

December 1969

December 1969: Abbot Mark Hogan was elected as the second abbot of Marmion Abbey.

November 1971

November 26, 1971: Abbot David Cyr was elected third abbot of Marmion Abbey.

1970

1970: First full crop of Christmas trees was harvested from the Abbey’s farm, which remains an important source of income.

December 1991

December 1991: Abbot Vincent Bataille was elected fourth abbot.

1994

1994: Infirmary wing was added to care for aging monks.

1998

1998: Major renovation of the original abbey building was completed; the Abbey Church of St. Augustine of Canterbury was dedicated on August 1, 1998.

June 2009

June 2009: The Abbey celebrated its 75th anniversary in Aurora.

June 2010

June 2010: Father John Brahill was elected fifth abbot.

August 2023

August 19, 2023: Abbot Joel Rippinger was elected sixth abbot of Marmion Abbey.

November 2024

November 16, 2024: Marmion Abbey Chapter endorsed Marmion Academy’s planning for a coeducational hybrid option starting as early as 2026.
